That's correct.

If you walk 1, might as well walk the other. Either way coach would have to have tremendous confidence in his pitcher.

No, the first baseman is still holding the runner on the bag, he just comes in a few steps and squares up when the pitch is released. That's still in enough to make a play at the plate.
