I thought this was a commit list?
True, but due to the lack of recruiting news I thought highlighting Kropog's upcoming Senior Bowl appearance was somewhat relevant to recruiting.

TulaneTigerFan - thanks...I definitely have not seen it. I'll check it out.
We both know Pres. Cowen/Admin has made a strong effort to get Tulane's entering freshmen stats and rankings back up.
A cursory review of Tulane's 2007 or 2008 entering freshmen classes (compared to like schools) shows a clear improvement:
SAT & ACT (25th/75th Percentile) Scores (Select Southern Div.-IA Schools):
- Rice ('07) --- 1330-1510; 29-34
- Vanderbilt ('07) --- 1300-1480; 29-33
...
- Tulane ('08) --- 1250-1430; 28-32
- Ga. Tech ('08) --- 1280-1410; 28-32
Let's keep our fingers crossed and hope Toledo's '09 recruiting class finishes strong (Cain, Johns, etc.).

I. Times-Picayune: Tulane football makes official the hiring of Steve Stanard as defensive coordinator (1/08/09)
- Stanard was the defensive line coach at Ohio University last season, but spent the previous nine seasons as defensive coordinator at New Mexico State and Colorado State.
- Also: neworleans.com: Tulane's Toledo Tabs Steve Stanard as Green Waves Defensive Coordinator (1/10/09)
II. Tulane loses 5 players...and WHY: LINK
Toledo also said that 5 players have left the program:
- LB Devin Holland ('07 2* recruit), the team's second-leading tackler last season with 61. Sources tell NewOrleans.Com Sports that Holland and the staff at Tulane agreed to disagree on the direction of the program, including the departure of Gilbert.
- FS Dominique Dade ('07 2* recruit). Could not make the grade. He was in academic trouble during his entire stay at Tulane.
- FB Cody Blackwelder ('07 2* recruit). Will not return in 2009 due to lingering injuries.
- OL Andrew Higgins ('07 2* recruit). Will transfer in an attempt to find a program where he can compete for playing time.
- DT Troy Wilson ('06 2* recruit). Suspended from the program for disciplinary reasons and will not return.

neworleans.com: Tulane makes moves; looks to close fast in recruiting
- Among the commitments, there are six players highly regarded by many national services.
- Toledo has three scholarships left to give.
TOP LOUISIANA TARGETS:
- RB/LB KENNY CAIN (John Curtis): Tulane faces tough competition for Cain. He will visit national champion Florida on January 16, Northern Illinois on January 23 and conclude with a visit to Tulane on January 30. Cain likes Tulane but could be swayed by the glamour and success of the Gators. The advantage Tulane may have is that they will offer Cain a chance to play running back or linebacker while Florida is thought to be looking at him primarily as a linebacker. Northern Illinois played in the Independence Bowl this season but ranks third in this race.
- S BRANDON MITCHELL (Amite): Mitchell is an outstanding athlete from Amite. He originally committed to play basketball for LSU a year ago with John Brady but current LSU basketball coach Trent Johnson withdrew the offer. Mitchell is 6'4 and was a dynamite athlete at quarterback for the Warriors this past season. He projects as a safety at the college level. Again, Tulane faces stiff competition for his services with Nick Saban and Alabama on him as well.
- LB RUFUS PORTER (Destrehan): Porter is an athletic, fast linebacker from Destrehan. Though not tall (6'0), he is a legitimate Division One prospect and could be a star. This is an uphill battle for Tulane. Porter has visited Louisiana Tech, has drawn interest from Mississippi State and is being recruited by June Jones at SMU. Texas has shown some interest but may not offer. The key here is that Porter's father, Rufus, Sr., lives in Texas and the son may want to be close to him. Meanwhile, Derek Dooley has been on Porter very hard and sources tell us that they are ahead of Tulane in the mix if he stays in-state.
TOP OUT-OF-STATE TARGETS:
- DE MALCOLM MITCHELL: 6'2, 220 out of Dunwoody High in Dunwoody, Georgia. He is considering East Carolina, UAB, Troy, Central Florida and Tulane. Mitchell visits ECU and UCF next week, Troy on January 23 and Tulane gets a shot for a last impression on January 30. With defensive line being a top priority in closing, Mitchell is a key player in Toledo's pursuits.
- WR DEVIN FIGARO: From Hargrave Military Academy prep school, Figaro is considering Tulane, UAB, East Carolina and Marshall. He visits UAB this weekend. The 6'3, 195 pound Figaro is from Lafayette and attended Lafayette High School. If Tulane can land him, it will help a very weak position on the team. He could contribute immediately. Tulane landing a prep school player would also signal a willingness for the administration to cooperate in helping football with admissions.
- TE KEVIN BURRIS: From Oconee County High School in Watkinsville, Georgia, Burris is a two-sport star, currently playing basketball at Oconee for the Warriors. He visited Tulane this week and is being recruited by East Carolina, Kansas State and Tulane. He would be a mid-year addition and could join Tulane in the spring, a huge benefit if Toledo can land him.
- RB OWEN VENSON: A 5'9, 190 pound running back from Morton Ranch High in Katy, Texas. Venson is considering Kentucky, Troy, Tulsa, North Texas and Tulane. He runs in the 4.5 range and can catch the ball out of the backfield.

Aren't we also looking at another mid year transfer?
Apparently it's between us and Ole Miss at this point. With 28 commitments and 5 JC transfers, how can Ole Miss take on anymore?

*** OnlineAthens/Athens Banner-Herald: North Oconee TE Burris Signs with Tulane***
- After talking to Burris for just two weeks, the Green Wave offered him a scholarship on Dec. 20.
- As a North Oconee graduate, the Titans' standout tight end returned the favor Saturday by sending Tulane a signed letter of intent to play football with the Green Wave.
- The 6-foot-2, 220-pound tight end led the Titans in receiving in his senior season with 24 catches for 319 yards and a touchdown.
- He helped lead North Oconee to its first playoff appearance and first playoff win and was named to the All-Northeast Georgia first team.
- Having graduated from North Oconee early, Burris' transition from high school student to college man will also be a quick one. He plans to fly to New Orleans and begin classes on Wednesday.
- Because he's starting school early and Tulane is paying for his first semester, Burris was able to sign his letter of intent before national signing day.

neworleans.com: Wave awaits word on 3 local stars (1/14/09)
- Tulane continues to work diligently in filling its final three slots for its 2009 recruiting class.
THE BAD NEWS:
- Today, Archbishop Shaw safety Chad Boyd has committed to Louisiana Tech. Tulane had recruited Boyd but decided to focus its efforts on other local players over the last two weeks.
Also: Times-Picayune: Shaw's Chad Boyd picks Louisiana Tech football (1/14/09)
- Despite his commitment, Boyd said he still plans to make his official visit to Northern Illinois that is scheduled for this weekend and possibly make an official visit to Tulane. He said he will not visit Tulsa.
- "Me and my family are going to go look at Northern Illinois and Tulane. They’re both great schools, but Louisiana Tech is the school I’m committed to right now.”
THE GOOD NEWS:
- This weekend, Tulane will welcome O. Perry Walker linebacker Kendrick James for a visit. The 6'1, 225 pound James is a verbal commitment to Louisiana Tech but is visiting the uptown campus this weekend. Sources tell NewOrleans.Com Sports that the James visit is serious and that Tulane has a shot at prying him away from the Bulldogs. James visited Nebraska this past weekend and the weather was very cold.
- Lutcher safety Dexter McCoil will visit Tulsa this week before visiting Tulane next week. McCoil has been previously recruited and offered by Auburn while Louisiana Tech remains interested in him.
- John Curtis running back/linebacker Kenny Cain will visit Tulane in two weeks. He still has visits to Arkansas, TCU and Northern Illinois but Northern Illinois is a long-shot at best.
Florida, which had expressed interest in Cain, has waned on him. He is a fall-back for the Gators. Cain was to have visited Florida this weekend as previously reported but that visit is off. Cain's head coach J.T. Curtis says that his two-way star's decision will likely come down to Arkansas, TCU and Tulane. As we have stated for over a month now, the Green Wave have a real shot here, having been on him for months.
- Out-of-state, the best possibility for Tulane is wide receiver Devin Figaro of Hargrave Military Academy and Lafayette High School.

A BIG WEEKEND AT TULANE
Several '09 recruits are expected to make their official visits this weekend. The most intriguing questions are:
- will current La. Tech commit OLB Kendrick James (O.P. Walker) make a visit?
- will coveted recruit D.J. Banks (West Monroe), a "firm" commit, make it official?
K Ryan Rome (Destrehan), DE Mike Henry (John Curtis) and DB Ryan Travis (Plaquemine) are all expected to make their official visits to Tulane this weekend.
Rivals.com: Kendrick James (Three-star; Offered by La. Tech, ULL, Kansas St., Minnesota, Miss. St. and UNC)

Times-Picayune: Destrehan's Darrington Sentimore still commited to Alabama (1/18/09) (Emphasis added)
Excerpts:
- WAVE OF OPTIMISM: Curtis defensive back Kenny Cain, a member of the TP Top 25 Blue Chip List, traveled to DeKalb, Ill., this weekend for an official visit to Northern Illinois of the Mid-American Conference, Curtis Coach J.T. Curtis said. Cain is scheduled to travel to Arkansas next weekend with a tentative mid-week trek to TCU before making his final visit to Tulane, Curtis said. Cain was scheduled to visit Florida this weekend and still has an official offer from the Gators, but he opted to cancel the trip given the unlikelihood of him choosing the national champions as a final destination. “Kenny told me, ‘Coach, I want to go somewhere where somebody wants me,” Curtis said. “He said, ‘I know I’m not that big to be playing linebacker. I don’t want to go somewhere where it’s going to be an uphill fight to play.’ He likes Tulane and he likes Arkansas. Tulane has done a great job with him, and he knows (former teammate and 2008 signee) Alex (Lauricella) is there and is doing well. I know he definitely wants to visit Tulane before making a decision.”
- TULANE TRIPPIN’: The Green Wave was scheduled to play host to five prospects, including four committed players, including O.P. Walker’s Kendrick James. The committed players visiting are Curtis lineman Mike Henry, quarterbacks D.J. Banks of West Monroe and Ryan Travis of Plaquemine and Destrehan kicker Ryan Rome. Banks and Travis have been recruited as athletes and likely will start out playing wide receiver and defensive back respectively. Lutcher’s McCoil (6-5, 175) is scheduled to visit Tulane next weekend with Figaro a possible visitor on Jan. 30.
- TAKING A LOOK: Although O.P. Walker linebacker Kendrick James (6-1, 225) reiterated his commitment to Louisiana Tech on Friday, he also views his official visit to Tulane and a possible trip to Nebraska as fact-finding missions to give him peace of mind over his Tech selection. “I’m still committed to Tech,” James, who also holds official offers from Tulane and Minnesota with a Nebraska offer expected. “I just didn’t want to go visit one school and make a decision. I wanted to see some other schools. I like (Tulane’s) academic program. Their athletic program is on the rise. And it’s right here at home. I liked what I’ve seen at Tech and right now I’m fairly solid with my commitment to Tech. It would probably take a lot to change my mind.”

Tulane continues to try very hard with Destrehan linebacker Rufus Porter, Jr. but the son of the former Saints linebacker favors Louisiana Tech and Tulsa over Tulane. This is an uphill battle.
i don't understand why so many kids from the NOLA area are choosing tech. i stayed in ruston for a few weeks following hurricane katrina and that is a miserable little town. the people there are probably some of the most racist i've been around also. i really don't understand the appeal unless they just want to get away from home

Ruston is horrible, etc., but Coach Dooley is simply doing a great job.
I also believe that a bowl win goes a long way when recruiting.
As always, academics play a factor. Some recruits are just uninterested or intimidated by the classroom.

*** UPDATE ***
neworleans.com: Cain opens door again for Tulane (1/26/09)
- The disappointment of Tulane of losing Kenny Cain to TCU this past weekend has been tempered. Cain has had second thoughts, saying that he was caught up in the moment of his visit to Fort Worth and now says he is not verbally committed to the Horned Frogs and will consider Tulane after all.
Cain has been scheduled to visit Tulane this weekend, giving the Green Wave the final shot before national signing day.
On Sunday, the John Curtis star had announced his commitment to TCU and spoke about it publicly. Suffice it to say that Tulane and Coach Bob Toledo have now put a full-court press on the former John Curtis star in an attempt to land him.
Tulane has worked harder on Cain than any recruit in their 2009 class. Perhaps their diligence will pay off after all.
neworleans.com: Curtis' Cain Picks TCU Over Tulane (1/25/09)
- "My visit went great" said Cain to PurpleMenace.com. "I liked it a lot. I got to spend time with the coaching staff and the players, kind of hung out and had fun."
- Even though Tulane was the only school recruiting Cain to play at the running back spot, the 6' 1", 215 prep standout was swayed by the opportunity to play for the high-regarded TCU defense as linebacker.
- As neworleans.com first reported, the Green Wave swallowed a bitter pill as the first school to heavily recruit Cain. But he chose to commit elsewhere without visiting the Tulane campus as he was scheduled to do next weekend.
- Cain choose the Horned Frogs over Tulane and Northern Illinois. Florida and Arkansas were both interested in Cain earlier in the recruiting the process, but both schools back off with the Razorbacks pulling a scholarship offer last week.
BRUTAL...

Tech went 8-5 last season with a bowl win, what has Tulane done recently?
