In modern sports, sort of; it used to happen all the time in baseball-- the Philadelphia A's made the White Sox; the Oakland As blew up the team of the 1st half of the 70s; the Royals provided Yankees teams fuel; the Twins spent a decade as the American League's AAA before becoming 80s and 90s relevant; the Padres blew themselves up under Trader Jack; Miami has done it a few times.

Oakland somehow was able to claim a small market team forever despite being in one of the most populated metros in the country.

The Giants lay claim to that since they have San Francisco and south, including San Jose.

A's have Oakland and East. Little different areas

I don't keep up with them much but the rest of their team must have really sucked because it appears they have the most desirable collection of outfielders in the history of baseball.

Yeah, but this one is MLB's fault. They gave the team to a group they knew didn't have the money to keep it afloat just because Derek Jeter was part of it. And then Jeter as director of operations gives Stanton to his old team for a song? This whole thing is fishy and half-assed.

Jeter will get them in shape.
He either has no clue what he's doing or he's got his hands tied with the owner's directives, he doesn't really have a shot.

and the Yankees were the only club willing to take on his contract
This is so silly. If Stanton magically became a free agent today, multiple teams would be willing to pay him that same salary. The idea that Stanton didn't have more value than the shitty deal they got back is absurd. So is the idea that the deal had to be done now and couldn't wait until the Marlins got something they wanted in return.
