AQ playoff spots will be good for college football’s regular season.

With straight seedings the top teams don’t has as much to play for in November.
But, for example, 4AQ in the SEC/Big Ten where the top 2 teams automatically get in and 3-6 have a play in that adds value to those conference races through the season.

Or maybe just don't make the playoff field so big that we are even debating whether the 5th place team in a conference is playoff worthy.
Playoffs never should have been expanded past 8 teams. 5 conference champs and 3 at-large. No at-large team with more than 2 losses would have been in the mix, so every regular season game would still have held a lot of importance.

this was always going to happen and there’s no way to stop it.
More bad news for you: it won’t stop at 16.

NCAA is going to keep screwing around with playoff expansion in pursuit of more money and they're going to end up with players unionizing and striking for a lot more money and benefits than they get now.
16 team playoff means teams are potentially playing 17 games already with a conference title game and 4 rounds of playoffs. That's already the equivalent of an NFL length season.
If they keep expanding, I can see regular season interest start to drop because then it becomes where a team like Vandy upsetting Bama isn't really that big of a deal to casual fans outside those 2 fan bases since everyone knows Bama would still be a lock for a 16 or 24 team CFP field. Every game mattering is what made college football the best regular season in sports. Now you can lose 3 or 4 games and still be in contention to win a championship. So why should fans invest as much into the regular season when the games aren't as important anymore?
