My grandfather and his brother were harness horse racers. My great-uncle was still active when I was very little. He held onto a few racers after retiring.

We buried him in his racing silks.

When I was in middle school, my father bought me a two-year-old quarter-horse filly that had a few track trials but didn't make it. I was just too young to handle her, and we ended up swapping her for a horse that I kept for the next two decades. After he passed, I just didn't think another horse could measure up, and I haven't had one since.

3 of them are yearlings. The 4th is a weanling.

2 of the 3 yearlings are out of a stud at Joe Bill Adcocks farm in Martin Louisiana. The stud is named El Deal. The 3rd yearling is out of another Adcock stud named Takeover Target.

The weanling is out of a real good stud up in Kentucky named Frosted.

No, we didn’t do the myhorse thing.

One of my good friends had his mares bred and recently had to retire, so he wanted partners in these 4 foals instead of selling them now.

As a former owner/breeder I can say it will cost you more than you’ll make.

Is that allowed to be said?

You went in on foals? You’ll be shelling out quite a bit and hopefully they make the track.

How is the mare bred for the frosted colt?

The mare we bred Frosted too is named Cazadora.

We have them in Kentucky at Hustland Farms.

Me, my father n law and my mentor all went in together on these 4 foals.

We know we won’t make any money, but we all 3 needed some tax deductions and we love horse racing. We own a suite at Louisiana Downs just because we live 30 mins from the track. The Downs purses have gone to shite and we hope we never have to run a horse there.

El Deal is the sire of a good LA bred mare named Free Like a Girl. The horse has won over $1.6 million after being bought at the Evangeline sale in 2020 for $5500. Not too shabby. She ran 2nd in a G1 on Oaks day to a really good mare named Idiomatic, that won at Monmouth in a G3 earlier today.

That’s is a good horse for sure.

Where are you located? We go to the derby often.

Are you still in a group of owners?

Kentucky. Not anymore. The ownership group still has a few horses, but I got out. Never made a profit, and i didn't expect to. Pretty much broke even. Still was exciting. The operational costs are getting expensive, due to the economy. Personally, I don't see how small ownership group can stay afloat having horses in NY or California. The day rate is double what it is in Kentucky. My advice to anyone is to get about 10-15 people together, claim a horse for whatever the budget is, and see what happens. Do your homework on selecting a trainer, because many of them are simply good salesmen , and not horsemen. Always keep in mind of the condition books. The cheaper the horse, the greater possibility, the vets will scratch,.especially somewhere like Churchill. HISA is trying their best to put trainers out of business , who specialize in the claim game.

If i was you this is what i would do.

I would convince your partners to sell the 3 yearlings and the weanling. Get them in a yearling sale immediately. The mare Cazadora is a cheap azz mare and Takeover Target as a stud is pure trash. El Deal is alright nothing special. Sell them all and do not put a reserve on them.

Now if you dont sell you looking at 18 months before the yearlings even run. You have to break them, send to track to get legged up, probably turn them out for 3 months, then put them back in serious training. Thats too much money in 18 months with no money coming in.

How much is that costing you?

LaD is the worst track in Louisiana as far as purses go. Good track surface but terrible purses.

Take this mans advice and do what he says. Go claim a horse and you can have action in the game in 3-4 weeks after claiming the horse.

Who would be your trainer?

If the horse was based in Louisiana or Kentucky? LA would be a guy like Sam David who is a sharp trainer. I'd even consider Chasey Pomier. Her old man (dad) has an eye for talent. She's an up and coming horsewoman. Kentucky would be Cherie Devoux or Maker.
