DETROIT -- A weekend soccer player in the Detroit area whose punch killed a referee has been sentenced to at least eight years in prison for involuntary manslaughter.
The case against Bassel Saad has put a spotlight on out-of-control recreational athletes and inspired Michigan lawmakers to consider new crimes for assaults on sports referees.
Saad, a Dearborn auto mechanic, admits striking referee John Bieniewicz during a game last summer at a Livonia park. Bieniewicz was preparing to call a penalty that would have dismissed Saad from the game.
In a dramatic moment, Bieniewicz's wife, Kris Bieniewicz, held up a red card in court Friday, signaling the dismissal. Saad expressed remorse.
He will be eligible for parole after eight years. His maximum punishment is 15 years in prison.

Im okay with this. Adults can't go around punching people for no legitimate reason. Have to accept the repercussions for your actions.

Same exact thing happened to my father, except the puncher was a career criminal, and he only received two years.

yeah he killed someone.. i understand that. But he doesnt deserve 8 years. He was caught up in heat of the moment. People punch people all the dam time. He didnt intentionally try and kill the guy. Accidents happen.

Of a freaking recreational sport? Did he really want that ribbon so bad someone had to die for it?

Yes, and it's a criminal act. If someone dies from you assaulting them, you should be charged with murder and serve time.

What terrible logic.
He committed assault, a crime, (knowingly and willingly) and it led to death.
His intent was assault, the result was death.
If someone drove drunk and killed someone should they be off the hook because intent was not there?
What about further. What if someone broke into a home unarmed, a fight breaks out with the owner which results in his death. Murder wasn't the intent, should he get away with it?

completely understand, and maybe i need to reword my original statement. He deserves punishment. But i just dont believe 8 years in jail for someone who did not intend to kill another is helping anyone. I dont know what punishment should be.

Still waiting on a hockey player to die from a punch to the head. Will be interesting to see what the NHL does after that.

I can't go into too much detail because it would be easy to look up, but Dad got punched in the back of the head a couple of times and died two months later of a stroke, something with the brain stem. Dad was a PSO, it wasn't a bar fight or anything.

what about someone driving while on the cell phone and wrecks and kills someone?
Or someone messing with the radio and wrecks and kills someone?
They are not going to jail for 8 yrs.

Weregild. Blood money. He should be forced to support the man's wife and children for as long as necessary.
Prison is for career criminals, not one-time offenders. Putting the man in prison serves absolutely no purpose.
