I was watching the Texas vs Oklahoma 1969 game. Had it on dvr from ESPN Classic.
At the end of the 3rd quarter they showed a couple of Sooners hold up the 4 fingers.
I too wondered when that started and it led me here. So no it was not Miami and no it was not Alabama in the 1970's.
At least it goes back to 1969 and I assume before this game it was done. Interesting question I think.
