(Qualifying results in the previous post.)
So who’s going to win the race? Amazingly, the top 7 guys in the championship qualified in the top 7 positions; they are clearly the class of the field. The pressure to assert their championship campaigns with just 3 races left is huge.
Josef Newgarden (starting P3) has 3 wins at Gateway, including the last two races held here. Pole sitter Will Power, Scott Dixon (starting P6), and Takuma Sato (starting P8) all have 1 win. These are the only Gateway winners in the field.
During the post-qualifying interviews, Colton Herta mentioned how hard it is to formulate a race strategy at Gateway (and other short ovals), because the undercut works great if there are no yellows in the pit window. At the end of the stint the car is going so much slower than at the beginning of the stint, that pitting early for fresh tires can give you a great advantage. The problem is that a green-flag pit stop puts you a lap down from the field. So if a yellow comes out before the other leaders have pitted, they can pit during the yellow and still stay ahead of all of the cars that pitted under green.
The overcut worked to perfection in 2019 when Takuma Sato, Tony Kanaan, Ed Carpenter, and Josef Newgarden all stayed out as long as they could during a pit window, and when Sébastien Bourdais crashed on lap 192 of 248, those 4 guys then controlled the race. But at first, all of the announcers, including ex racers Paul Tracy and maybe Townsend Bell, thought the yellow flag was bad for these 4 guys. Somehow they all forgot that everyone else was a lap down because they pitted during green at a short track. This caused confusion for a few minutes until they finally realized how the overcut gamble paid off. Sato led the rest of the way and blipped Carpenter at the line for the first and only short oval win of his career.
Note that the original schedule was for the race broadcast to start at 6:00 pm ET and the green flag to fall at about 6:30 pm ET, but because of weather concerns, they have moved up the race start.
Broadcast starts at 6:00 pm ET on the USA Network (and the Peacock app)
Green flag is at 6:01 pm ET

That was a crazy/stupid race. Those are fun occasionally, and Sato inevitably wins them of course

Interesting, for once, Sato is going for the undercut on an oval.

Ha, Sato went from P7 to P1 on the undercut!
The race is at about the halfway point. If weather comes in, they can call the race.

Newgarden, McLaughlin, and Sato pitted during the FCY.
Newgarden vaulted himself into the lead after just a few laps. McLaughlin moved up a couple of positions to P4. Sato got stuck in P8, held up by lapped cars I think. So the top 8 guys are on two different strategies right now.

Newgarden and McLaughlin in P1 and P2 with 3 pit stops.
The next 5 guys (the other 5 championship contenders) are still on 2 pit stops.
Malukas, Sato, Rahal and Herta are P8 to P11, with 3 pit stops.
Lap 188 of 260. Getting close to 3 stoppers doing their last pit stop, but everyone made their first pit stops early, so I'm not sure anyone can actually pull off a 3 stopper. With incoming weather a factor, it's hard to figure out what is the right strategy.

Lap 216, weather yellow!
Current order:
1. McLaughlin
2. Newgarden
3. O'Ward
4. Power
5. Malukas
6. Sato
7. Ericsson
8. Dixon
9. Rahal
10. Palou
Now a red flag! I think the weather will pass and they will resume the race, but who knows.
Everyone has done their last pit stops. Dale Coyne teammates Malukas and Sato have fresher tires than O'Ward and Power, so they may be able to challenge them if it goes green again.

Crap, the rain is getting a little stronger, but worse is the report of lightning in the area.
This race may be done.

Indycar needs rain tires

Thought they had rain, but don't use them on ovals.

Maybe so, I try to watch but not up to speed like F1.

Same. Seems like I remember them nix'ing wets for the Nashville starts.
Wets on an oval is a deathwish

Impossible to race on ovals in the rain.
The sun is out but the rain is still falling. Even if it stops, it takes a while to dry off the track and there is not much daylight left, unfortunately.

Gotcha, hope they get to restart.

Malukas says he has 17 fewer laps on his tires than O'Ward and Power, so he wants to get back out there! (Sato pitted on same lap as Malukas as well.)

Compare this red to F1, where shockingly they allow tire changes and repairs during a red flag.

Wow, the track looks dry already. Unfortunately they have to wait 30 minutes past the last lightning strike. I'm not sure how long ago that was.
Whoops, that was just pit lane. They are still trying to get water off the track.
