Who's to say they don't create a thousand more of these 13-second Zion highlights?
Because the first series is already out. They can't go back and create more unless they can go back in time.

Owning would imply you could garner royalties any time someone used the highlight.

I don't get it so I'll stay out of it. If you have fun using Topshot, then by all means. I would just be careful getting into it as an investment, that's all. To each his own and I have no place determining who's hobbies are valid or not.

Do you enjoy the product or just the potential money you could make off of it?

I'll give a better review once/if I can withdraw my money

I think some people think you own the rights to these highlights. That’s not happening here. This is just like a sports card but on the computer. It’s a “futuristic” trading card really.
Trading cards value are determined by their condition, scarcity, and of course who is featured.
Think of a MJ rookie card they only made 10 of. In the same vein, they can make these digital card featuring a highlight of a player and only release a certain number of them.
Instead of a “rookie card” you just have “Lukas first dunk” or whatever. The idea is the same.

Right except it’s nothing alike. Having one of 100 physical prints of something is valuable. Having 100 of the same 15 second highlights that anyone with an internet connection has access to is not. You’re foolishly giving your money away in the hopes that someone will later foolishly give more of their money away to you for something that literally has no value. At all. It’s not rare at all. It’s not unobtainable. It’s not exclusive. It’s not limited. It’s free and abundant and easily consumed.

The only place it is scarce is on the topshot website. Readily obtainable on the rest of the internet. The long established sports card market creates a product that has proven to be valuable as a collectible to a large portion of sports fans over the years. You hit the nail on the head

I can print a million Honus Wagner T206 cards. Does that devalue the Holy Grail Wagners out there?

Well you'd go to jail if you tried to resell them as original T206s

And you wouldn't for selling a fabricated one of these?

Ah so it's not the blockchain that gives it value, it's the license from the NBA that they give to tons of media?

Uh, what?
ETA: People buy, sell, and breed digital cats identified by blockchain to the tune of $40 Million. But yes, the inherent interest level of the NBA over digital cats does give it more value. But the backbone is the scarcity enabled by blockchain technology.

This thread just shows how much more potential growth BTC/crypto/blockchain/digital assets still have. This thread would be fun to revisit in 10 years.

Have you guys looked at these digital cards? The presentation is not just like watching YouTube. They are like cubes that play the highlight from different angles and it is designed uniquely.
I could easily say you just have a picture of a guy on cardboard. But only 100 of those were created so that does make them valued.
The same goes for this here. It’s not just a highlight. The highlight is just like the guy taking the picture for a sports card. It’s just a way to portray the subject. It’s not what decides it’s value, other than if the highlight has actual special meaning.

Enjoy losing what little money you have on fairy farts and unicorn queefs.

i don't care how much you gussie up the highlight, a boujee highlight is still a damn highlight. And it's still not worth a nickel much less $100,000. But if people want to piss away their money chasing every "new bitcoin", then by all means go ahead. Ask robin hood traders what happens when you make a shite ton of money very quickly that goes against the grain.
