I'd consider trying it out the schedule yourself right now OP. It sounds like you haven't brought it up to your employer yet. Try the schedule on your own for your current job. Drive a loop to work that takes 2.5 hours there and back home. 3 days a week for 2-3 weeks.
Tons of guys like Airline Pilots do this type of schedule routinely. Get some tips from Airline pilots that are gone for 3-4 days in a row then have some time off. Guys work 14 on 14 off routinely, Fireman work 48 on 48 off or whatever it is. So a non 9-5 M-F schedule is by no means abnormal, you just didn't see if it works for you. The last thing you want is to ruin your life over it then have to quit in 2 months.
I think its more viable for you to stay overnight for a night or 2. Between the wear and tear on your car and the fuel, you'd damn near break even on 1 night in a hotel over driving 5 hours.
