I never hold it for more than a year and grab the bonus every four years. Freedom Unlimited gives you 3x dining, same as Reserve. The cheaper Preferred gives you 2x travel vs 3x for Reserve. You'd have to spend a ridiculous amount on travel at 3x to counter the $200 extra fee.
While I agree that the Reserve has lost value over time, I’m not sure it’s quite that simple for people who don’t keep a wallet full of cards. If someone doesn’t have another card that give GE, that’s $20/yr. $60/yr from DoorDash credit, plus the value of the membership. Then the 1.5x through the portal instead of 1.25x (and yes, I know that’s a much weaker valuation that transfer partners, but let’s not pretend as though the majority of people aren’t going to use it that way
But again, that obviously starts to shift if you double up on some of these benefits with other cards.

It has become my opinion over time that those folks are probably better off grabbing the best cash back card they can find from a bunch of banks to maximize the differing categories, but I can't (or won't
) try to mathematically prove it.

Which they’ll do for a few weeks before just starting to grab the first card they see in their wallet
And jokes aside, as someone who more often than not flies out of a regional airport, and therefore usually has a connection, at least once a year, I’ll just say frick it book a flight using points through the Chase portal, so I actually do get some benefit from the redemption bonus.
But I’m mostly just too lazy to work the card game the way I used to

Probably, but my thinking is the aren't saddled with the annual fees once they inevitably do that.

Which I completely get. I guess I’m simply giving the CSR a mild defense for people who don’t want to heavily play the card game, spend a fair amount of money on dining and travel, and would like to convert most or all of their points into future travel, sometimes using transfer partners, but sometimes taking the easy route and booking through the portal. Which while I appreciate is a narrowly defined category likely describes a fairly large group of people. I know my currently lazy arse falls into it

I’ll be watching your posts intently

Pretty sure you can downgrade to a free card. Don’t cancel, especially if it’s her only card.

******Bumping my own old thread, but didn't feel like a new thread is warranted.
Would it make sense for my wife, to get the Freedom Unlimited (she is currently an authorized user on mine) and then get rid of her CSR before the annual fee hits?
I do 95% of the travel and restaurant purchases on my card, and we really don't need here to have one at this point. She spends maybe $200 a month on a credit card.
She is preapproved for the freedom unlimited with her chase login, and I'm wondering if it would just be smart to get that card, and then get rid of the CSR only for her. I would keep mine for another year.
Would adding this card for her and then removing the CSR affect any points she has, or would they remain on her account?
And for me when the AF increases, I think I will just downgrade to the CSP if that makes sense.
