I currently work for a small company that will be losing our biggest client at the end of the year. The business that is left over will not be enough for my employer to keep anybody on and everyone will be laid off at some point in December.

My question is how would filing for unemployment impact my employer? Will he get hit financially in any way? He's a good guy and I don't want to do anything to hurt him. He could have laid me off already and pocketed my salary.

I checked the online calculators. Worst (or best) case scenario is I would collect roughly $6K if it took me 6 months or longer to find a job. I'm very healthy financially and could go without work for a long time before it was an issue. $6K wouldn't change much, but I would hate to turn down free money.

Hopefully it won't come to this. Most likely I'll get snatched up by the new firm taking over the client. I just want to know my options and how it impacts my boss.

Thanks!

Not sure the answer to your question, but, I think you should proactively worry about your wallet, rather than the guy who you work for.

His UI Tax rate may increase as a result of your filing successfully (layoffs would mean you are eligible to collect UI benefits). His rate of UI Tax would not impact a bottom line that is essentially going away anyway. The UI Benefits are ultimately a form of insurance in a sense (UI=Unemployment Insurance). So you aren't going to be breaking his piggybank open-nor is anyone else.

Bigger employers like oilfield construction companies rotate layoffs at job-sites regularly en masse and they continue to do well with their bottom line. I know one size doesn't fit all in this comparison but I'm just trying to point out that this isn't a punitive increase in his UI Tax rate we're talking about. It will go up but it isn't going to put him out of business.

Thanks for the replies.

I get the replies about worrying about myself and I'll do that. I was just curious about how this works. I have 2 months before this will possibly even be an option.
