Transfer funds from VUG to VIGAX without paying gains?

Not trying to not eventually pay capital gains but I have a small amount of $ in VUG right now. With fidelity however I can't do automatic investments with an ETF, only mutual funds.
The VUG equivalent of a mutual fund is VIGAX. However, VIGAX requires an initial $2500 deposit. If I just said frick it and made that deposit now to get the fund started I'd dip more into my emergency fund than I'm comfortable with.
However, in a few months (depending on the market) my VUG account with my regular investment amount will be big enough that I could unload and it and buy into VIGAX and then just keep piling on automatically. I guess over the course of a few months the capital gains won't be that significant but I was curious in general is there a way to directly transfer a position into another position and defer the capital gains?

No, but I like your thinking - they need to come up with a 1031 exchange for stocks. As long as I reinvest my gains within 180 days, I should be able to keep rolling the money over and not pay capital gains until I'm ready to cash out for good!!
