We make too much to contribute to a Roth IRA or to qualify for a tax-deductible contribution to a traditional IRA.

Is there any point at all in contributing to a traditional IRA in this position, or should I just keep going with my other investment vehicles (equities, funds, gold, etc.)?

I'll hang up and listen.

I believe your gains would grow tax free until retirement and would not be taxed as CG

Google "Backdoor Roth IRA". I am not allowed to put money into a roth due to income, but have been getting money into a roth for several years using this strategy. Basically you put your money into a traditional IRA then roll it over to a Roth sometime later.

I've been doing this on Vanguard website for the last few years, very easy to do. Basically fund a "traditional IRA", immediately exchange to a "Roth IRA". You can do it all yourself online, or call Vanguard customer service and they will walk you through it.

Just be sure to fill out IRS form 8606 when you file your federal taxes.

As mentioned above, when you google "backdoor roth IRA", you will be able to read all of the details. It was basically a "loophole" that began in 2010.
