Does any know about tax preparer courses and certification? Also what about pay? How much can one expect to earn?

Are you tallking about Enrolled Agent with the IRS? The best certification is the CPA. It can be costly and the exams are pain in the arse but you will hit a ceiling very quickly without the CPA license.
Guess it all depends on your career goals.

I'm sure there are a thousand BS "certifications" out there where you send them a check and an open book test and they send you a certificate.
A CPA license has educational requirements, testing requirements, and you can do a lot with it.
The IRS has an Enrolled Agent program, that involves testing. It's not crazy difficult, but you need to study. It also makes you easier to regulate by the IRS. You do need annual continuing education. Most state revenue agencies also respect the EA program. Most EAs tend to focus on individual returns.
The few I know tend to charge 50-60 an hour. Obviously you have some expenses. And it may not be year-round work.
