Thanks. While I think they may be able to close the gap given time, I don't know how much I trust the end result of them being equal on costs. I mean, even within that article, it says Toyota pays a top wage of $25 an hour, while the UAW is getting $62 (for workers who "actually build cars," as they put it). There's too much political subterfuge involved with the auto stuff for my tastes.

You misread it to fit your liking.
$25 an hour is without benefits. The $62 an hour is total pay package for the top earners who are actually "building" cars. I believe Toyota is at an average of around $52 an hour. - Also, the deal is a 4 year deal to where the higher paid workers will get phased out.
Not to mention whatever the new concessions are. They will most likely put GM on par with Toyota after a few years.
Then again, Toyota is wanting to open up a plant in Mississippi that pays up to $14 an hour ($28k a year). The race to the bottom continues. One day we'll be complaining about any worker who makes above min wage.

Please point me to the place in the article where it says that that wage is without benefits, rather than insult me unnecessarily. I just read the article, I don't have any predisposed notions one way or the other.

Obviously, GM has huge legacy costs that will never go away. They will never just go back on the obligations and promises they've already made to retired employees. It is readily available on the internet. Toyota's labor costs are around $48 to $53 an hour currently and expected to rise, as Toyota's employees get older, unless they open that plant up in Mississippi and there's also a downward push for the Texas car assembly plants to get total compensation down, as well. The goal is to get the lowest wages, right?

I don't understand how that answers my last question, since you felt obliged to call me out. Can you also provide a link to your Toyota $$ numbers? Thanks.

I read somewhere that GM does not have a single new product rollout or significant redesign planned for 2009.

if that is true, then they deserve to go out of business. It is not tolerable.
Did you hear about the 2010 Camaro? I'd call that significant, but I'm an enthusiast so you may not.
What new product redesigns or rollouts do the other car companies have?

quote:All I heard was that GM didn't have any new product designs out for '09. This is secondhand, like I said, and I could be wrong. Is the new Camaro going to be widespread production or a limited run?

Well then don't believe everything you hear. There's lots of propaganda out there from both sides of the story.
2010 Camaro will have 4 models and 3 different engine options including a V6 with more power and better fuel economy than the V8 Mustang.

Nowhere on that link does it say Toyota numbers don't include benefits.
