Have about 10k in checking/savings (and increases every pay period).

Will be a 2-3 year investment?

Was looking at the Vanguard preset investment portfolio. Thoughts?

Vanguard has many good choices. Call their help line and tell them what you are looking for in the amount of risk you are willing to take. I bought Vanguard Wellesley a little less than 2 years ago, I think. It is a balanced fund but with a bit of a change. They put 30% in stock mostly large cap value stocks. The rest is in intermediate bonds. Most balanced funds have a higher % in stocks. I consider it a little safer than some other balanced funds. Vanguard’s expenses are among the lowest in the business.

I use Wellesley for the same purpose. I keep about 6 months of expenses there. Even if bonds take a hit in the not too distant future, the distributions are pretty decent and still beat savings accts by a mile. If you want the flip of the bond/stock ratio, check out Wellington.
