Relocating to Little Rock

I received a job offer in Little Rock, so I wanted to see what the Money Board's thoughts were on the town. I understand that cost of living is relatively low, but what should I expect to spend on a 1 bd apt and still be in a safe part of town? Any parts of town to avoid? Any other thoughts or tips would be appreciated.

I think it's a pretty rough town

I live and work in little rock. You definitely want to try and live in either the Heights, Hillcrest, or West Little Rock areas if you can help it. Otherwise maybe choose a suburb (Bryant, Sherwood, etc). The general rule is to not go South of I-630 in Little Rock (aka the hood).

I would stay in Dallas. Having said that, WLR is probably your best bet, depending on how far you are willing to commute. I lived in the Riverdale area about ten years ago. It was ok and close to downtown but I wouldn't live there again.

Any chance you could work in NWA instead of LR?

That.
Also, LR is a pretty cool town. You have all the trappings of a big city in a smaller city environment.
Lived there 6 years and loved it.
Hillcrest north of Markham by Kavanaugh is pretty cool. Had 2 malls, 2 golf courses, good eats, really nice mountain bike trails and the football stadium all within a 5 minute walk of the house.

Thanks for all the info. I was hoping to hear a general rule of thumb like that. North of 630 it is. What are typical apartment/ utilities costs for a small apartment in this area?

Nope, they only have a LR location.

That sucks, work hard/network. Maybe you can find a job in NWA. Most who get to NWA never leave.
Cheap living and one of the nicest places in the country to live.

This. That area is beautiful and very nice. I have been trying to find a job there but no luck.

I doubt the cost of living would be lower in those 20. Sure, you can find nicer places.
In Arkansas, it's far and away the best.
Benton county is finally a wet country, too. Some big time companies that pay bank and you could find a place to live for $500. That's dirt cheap.

I would not live in LR if they gave it to me. I spent some time in Bryant last year and liked it.

Doesn't little rock have a gang problem?

Ft. Smith is beautiful. It would be a great place for a second home but not as good a place to settle down.
If you want opportunity you need to be in a big city. If you're getting ready to retire places like Ft. Smith, Bozeman, or Bend OR would be good choices.

I personally would try and live in the Heights area just b/c i don't like to drive all over the place.

I played baseball in Little Rock for a year - entire team had our apartments in West Little Rock - was definitely the nice part of town. UALR campus/filed were not in a nice part of town - I would avoid those areas.
