I always recommend Charles Schwab.
I have all of my stuff with them ( 401K, IRA, Checking, Brokerage) and have never had a complaint.
Customer service is top notch, they refund all ATM fees, 0 cost trading, top notch trading platform, etc.

Schwab is in the process of buying Ameritrade. But they all have good platforms for general investing - you said novice, so I'm assuming you're not about to jump into options, futures or forex.
I invest and trade options actively with Think or Swim on Ameritrade. But I'm getting ready to place my uncle's account with Charles Schwab. I think that their in-office customer service, associated banking and wealth management services are superior to the other majors. I couldn't tell you much about Fidelity, although they are top notch as far as customer ratings go. Same with Merrill.
I can understand a much older person being overly concerned with platforms. But any millennial that struggles with these super easy to navigate platforms that are universal these days... you really aren't ready to be investing on your own anyway. And anyway, all the majors have broker assistance (for a fee, of course).

for the novice
if you are a novice maybe just use a brokerage account with Vanguard or Fidelity? if you have a IRA with them already?
If not use one of the company's listed above.

Schwab. I've had an account with them since 2006.
