I agree with your sentiment. Learning, or being taught, responsible use of debt and credit is a helluva lot more important than having a high credit score, IMO. Best case, a kid graduates with a high credit score and a high sense of credit responsibility.

My girlfriend’s grandson is in his freshman year of college. He’s an average kid, maturity/responsibility wise. His mother has set him up with a card in the way that I first described: one card with a $2000 limit. But she’s drummed it into his head that the card isn’t play money. He works and he pays the balance off (for incidentals). She pays the school related expenses and she monitors the card online. My hope is that this helps him to learn some basic budgeting rules, as well as credit management. But in the end, he ain’t my monkey.

We gave our oldest an authorized user account on an AMEX Platinum when she turned 13. She didn't carry it around, but she was listed. When she turned 18, she could have gotten any card that she wanted. Her credit score was high 700s.

We started with the Wells Fargo Propel AMEX. They approved her for a $30,000 limit. I had her tell them to make it $5000. :)
