re: Internal Audit at LSU

Yeah - what Kfizz said. I'm was speaking purely from a B4 perspective. SOX compliance is still obviously a huge deal for public companies, and it's still a major revenue stream for PA firms, but there's no comparison to even 3-4 years ago. This is totally anecdotal, but I know back in 2005 my firm's Houston office was bringing in armies of interns (40-50) every summer... strictly for IA and 404 related work. Now there's only a handful.

The internships are at Big 4 and industry. All of the big 4 recruit heavily nationwide...plenty of big 4 from houston, dallas, NYC, DC. Other companies like Nestle, Capital One, Freddie Mac, Continental, Protiviti, Grant Thornton, etc. also recruit the IA program.
I interned last summer with Freddie in McLean, VA and had a great time. The program is a lot of work but once you understand how the class works everything gets much easier for the students.

How's it like being a legit CIA? What do you do all day? Would I have to work in Houston?
Could I major in say...history... and add this Internal Audit stuff on and have a chance at a legit job?

i would think so. If you get that internship you would be good.

Is it required to wear business casual and be clean shaven for class?
Posted on 10/11/09 at 5:12 pm to LouisianaSportsman
Doing the program is probably the best way to answer that question. You'll likely get a legit internship where you can figure out if you like that stuff. If it's not your bag, you've got experience and resume material, and (if you're a junior) another year or two to find a job you want.

So if I really like IA.. I'd need to major in business to increase my chance of an IA job?

It's not required, but it surely helps a lot.
A management degree isn't that hard of a curriculum and would make a decent compliment to IA.
Are the standards for the business college the problem? I know that they have gone up a lot recently.
Posted on 10/11/09 at 9:52 pm to LouisianaSportsman
No, not necessarily. I think if you did the IA program and got an internship through it [and presumably liked it], there is a better than 50% chance that you'd be offered a job upon graduation. I think almost every person I know who did it got full-time offers. Admittedly, they were all business majors of some sort, but the difference between a management, marketing, and history degree is pretty negligible IRL. The only downside, IMO, is you might need the CPA at some point in your career (you might not), and if you don't major in acct/fin or take some business classes in undergrad, you're going to have to take a ton of classes to be able to take it, which will likely suck. If you think IA/business is what you might want to do, why not just change the major anyway?

Is it like a 3.3 now?

It just depends. Some companies are open to all majors whereas some allow only accounting majors to interview with them. GPA is another criteria that some companies look at before they choose to interview.

Thanks for the advice guys.. I'm not at LSU yet; I'm looking at Construction Management, Internal Auditing, and Petroleum Engineering.. so I'd like to have options. I'll prolly just switch my major to accounting if I can't handle the engineering.

Trust me, I have a lot of friends that did CM and graduated pre-recession. The highest salary of all of my friends was 41,000 and he had a great GPA, internships and a connection in Houston.
Average is about 35,000.
It's nearly impossible to find a job in CM these days, but I'm sure the market will have picked up by the time this guy graduates.
Accounting is the best bang for your buck, but you have to be willing to be an accountant.

Same here, I know at least 20 CM guys, some of my best friends.

And with one gentle gab, The Hidden Flask destroys my career ambitions.

Are they specialized accounting jobs where I can work a non-40 hr./week schedule? I'm attracted to plant jobs and such because I like working a lot at one time and having time off.. I also don't mind traveling; consulting sounds really cool. I'd be sold on accounting if this is the case.
