I have to have jaw surgery in the next 9 to 10 months to correct my bite. The surgery itself involves at least 1 overnight stay in the hospital. I do have medical insurance through work, but I’m trying to avoid any nasty surprises that might come with a hospital stay and any gap in coverage. Is this insurance worth it? What carriers should I be looking at? Ive never had any kind of major surgery, much less stayed the night in a hospital, so I’m a bit nervous. Hoping someone here can educate me and give me a little peace of mind.

I would assume most hospital indemnity policies would have a pre existing condition limitation.

I would think so. I’m not even sure if this would even be considered a pre existing condition at this point. I’m in the process of getting braces, but one of the drawbacks is that it’s that it’s going to create a noticeable overbite. I can forgo surgery and just live with the overbite or have the overbite corrected in 10 months. So I guess I have a little time before it actually becomes a pre existing condition.

My wife got it through her work since we were expecting a child. $1000 per admission and $200 for each night stay starting on day 2. Daughter became jaundiced so we end up staying extra days. Got $1400 from that stay. Then she was admitted to the hospital again around 4 months for 2 days. Another $1200 there. I think she pays $9 biweekly for it so it’s been well worth the money.

Insurance is for things that would break you financially.

If you dont have an emergency fund, I think an indemnity policy is a good thing.

However once you are setup and have a financial foundation, I'm not a big fan of accident and sickness policies.

It is like low deductibles for other insurance (auto/home), without savings it is worth the extra premium to help you out in a jam. But once you have savings built up, you are probably throwing money away with low deductibles.

You probably will be denied since you’ve been told you need surgery already, which basically means it will be treated like a pre-existing condition.

The pre-existing condition limits usually phase out after a period of time - my wife and I had a policy through Voya that paid out quick and easy for a very much pre-existing pregnancy at the time of enrollment and effectiveness of the policy. Read the fine print of whatever you're buying.

Thanks for the info so far. I just want to be as prepared as possible. Like I mentioned earlier, I’ve never had any type of major surgery or spent the night in a hospital. I’ve spent the better part of two years completely paying off my debts minus student loans and building a decent little savings. I’m trying to avoid ending up right back where I was a couple years ago.

Aflac
Colonial
State Farm

All will have a question about pre-existing conditions. Will pay somewhere around $150-250 for surgery and about the same for any overnight hospital stay.
