Yeah. They've privatized and cut back quite a bit over the last two decades, but they still remain a high tax country that manages to get by on the unity of shared consensus.
Like Denmark, Norway, Finland, Switzerland, & Germany, they don't have a minimum wage, but just work things out between worker groups and management groups. As long as their industries can remain competitive relative to their near neighbors, it all seems to work out pretty well.
For what it's worth, I just made a " Euro Area 2011 Debt/Deficit/Spending Figures (compared to USA)" thread on the Poli Board.
Top 5 Highest Spending Levels: Denmark (57.9%); France (55.9%); Finland (54.0%); Belgium (53.3%); Sweden (51.3%). (USA spent ~40%)
Top 5 Highest Deficits: Ireland (13.1%); Greece (9.1%); USA (8.7%); Spain (8.5%); U.K. (8.3%).
Top 5 Highest Debt Levels: Greece (165.3%); Italy (120.1%); Ireland (108.2%); Portugal (107.8%); Belgium (98.0%).

I considered posting this on the Poli board as well, but figured it more accurate to post in here.
Doc, you seem very knowledgable about all these countries

If you put it on the Poli board we would be at 10+ pages by now

Would that be a good or bad thing?
It seems threads can get derailed there sometimes

Most unhappy country is France. Last I heard they were still in Europe.

These countries also have a problem with population replacement. Because of low birth rates these countries do not have enough workers to pay the taxes to take care of the vast array of social services.
