My deductible was $250 prior to ACA.
My out of pocket max was $800.

No shite.

I now have a more expensive plan. $4000 deductible. $8000 maximum out of pocket. And I get to enjoy that blessing every single year over and over and over.
And I'm one of the lucky ones (my plan is twice as good as the government plan offered my wife. I work for a fortune 100).

The opposite. Well visits are out of pocket. They take care of you if you get hit by a truck.

Okay. I've never heard anything positive about these kinds of religious based health sharing plans so I was kind of surprised to see it mentioned here, though I'm no expert.

also, i'm not certain but i don't think this would allow you to qualify for an HSA.

Correct. Also can't take the self employment tax deduction like you would with insurance.

Upsides include not having to worry about in or out of network and the surprise bills that come with it, plus lower premium and deductible.

I think it’s basically a catastrophic plan for people with nothing wrong with them

It's a little better than that. My deductible is only $1k and I can satisfy it by negotiating a discount.

Would still be worthwhile if I had a chronic condition because I could pay cash for that and still come out ahead compared to the higher premiums and deductibles with insurance.

If the OP wants to feel any better, I pay $19,500 in premiums for a family of 5, and I had to pay $18,500 in medical bills this year (max out of pocket).

$1500/month for a family plan is about what I have total (company pays about $1000, I pay $500). You’re paying 1500/month yourself on a company plan? Or are you self employed or something?
