Does a 17 y/o living at home need to file tax return?

Just because you get a W2 doesn't mean you have to file. There is a minimum earning threshold where persons under that amount do not have to file. However, like a previous poster stated, if that person wants to get a refund of the taxes withheld from their paychek then they should file.

Just asking if it's required. Yes he got w2. Total gross is less than 1k

Then no, there's no need to file. The only reason to file in this case would be to get a refund.
