I was in the same boat as you superfly and I went with the Barclays + card. The reason I did was because for the CSP you only earn double points on travel and dining (someone correct me if i'm wrong), but with the Barclays card you earn double points on every purchase plus you get 10% of your miles back after you book a trip. Most of my expenses are gas and groceries so I didnt see me justifying the annual fee on the CSP. I have the Freedom also. I am no expert by any means but I just wanted to give my 2 cents
i know cash back is not popular on this board, but the fact that you can get 6% cash back on groceries and 5% cash back on gas makes it hard to believe that any points card at either 1 or 2x points is worth using
i understand that sometimes a point can be worth more than $0.01 in terms of redemption, but I don't think they will regularly be double or more in value.....but my foray into the points rewards is very limited
i guess one con of having cash back as opposed to travel points is that you can't take a vacation and proclaim that it didnt cost you anything....even though you could essentially save all of your cash back to reimburse you for a vacation in a similar manner

Barclay's has a fee, too, though. I see what you are saying though. CSP provides a lot more flexibility in terms of using the points IMO
And you get a 7% points bonus on points earned on the CSP at the end of the year.

I just booked a biz/first class one way ticket for 2 that prices out right at $10k. That was 125k AA points or 100k Amex SPG points. You can't do that with any cash or travel reimbursement card. Did I have to fly business, no, but I could have booked coach that priced out at $5k for 75k points or 60k AMEX SPG points.

Blue Cash Preferred but it's only up to $6000 in purchases so the cash back is limited to $360 a year. It does not give 5% cash back on gas. That is Chase Freedom 2 quarters a year for up to $1500 spent a quarter for a total of $75 cash back each quarter in addition to other cash back earned.
Instead of getting cash back in the Freedom categories I take the 5X points instead and transfer the points to my CSP UR account. That's an extra 30000 points a year to transfer to an airline for spending $1500.

amex BCP offers the 6% on groceries up to 6K, which covers our grocery bills...it used to be unlimited, but the limit was added (i assume to combat MS)
5% CB on gas can be had with a penfed card, with no annual fee
as i said earlier, i'm not completely familiar with points and how they can be redeemed for the bang for buck
i dont spend a lot on travel, so I don't mind the cash back.....and its a good easy to understand reward for beginners

As long as you're getting something back that you value it's all good.

The old AMEX Blue can still be had. After you reach the $6,500 spend you get 5% gas, 5% groceries, 5% drugstores. Not bad.

My fiancee doesn't want to be helpful
I did, however, do another way of offloading one of these that I should have thought of sooner. My insurance takes credit card.
Bold > Vanilla V GC > pay insurance. Duh
We shall see

On the Visa, AmEx, etc gift cards isn't there a fee four or five bucks each time? Then the money order another dollar or two? Doesn't that cut into the "profits"? Looking to learn from the masters.
Just started using my Ink for amazon GC's for 4x the points.

Yes, that is why you typically only use cards that get 1% or 2% back to meet minimum spends or intro bonuses. Otherwise, it's smarter to use cards with the higher % back for long term MS.

Yep. That's correct. It's all about maximizing.
I haven't been around long enough in the MS world, but VRs were so clutch. If you lived near a CVS, all you had to do was buy a ton during one trip, pay the $3.95 fee per, then punch the code in online.
It took about 30 seconds.
Now every day it seems MS at Wal-Mart is being phased out.
Anyone have a serve account? I'm thinking of closing my BB and get the serve. Can load $1,000 via CC monthly. Between that and Amazon Payments, seems it's an easy way to get 2K in points per month just my clicking a few buttons.
ETA: Are there any gas stations in Louisiana that anyone has had luck buying VRs?

I can be a little dense so walk me through it if you can. If I spend $1k on a Visa gift card at Office Depot and it costs 4.95. Ill get 5000 points but that's only worth 5 bucks. Doesn't seem like that's getting ahead?
Posted on 6/20/14 at 9:43 am to jimithing11
Ya ill probably do serve as well.
The place to go to buy VRs/OVs is a Valero. Not the ones that have an independently owned store attached, the ones labeled "country store #×××" on their website.
Of course now, loading OVs is a problem but maybe you'll find a VR for sale

Is there a strict limit on the amount of VR's you can buy daily there?
Also, where on the website do you see "country store #×××"

Check out this search result for "Louisiana" and you can spot the difference.
Term was "Corner Store"
My bad.
The ones that have "Kwik Stop" or whatever seem to not hold the same type of stock as "Corner Stores." So I assume perhaps Valero owns the Corner Store properties/they have a different arrangement. I've never had luck at a non-Corner Store.
No idea on limits. I only got to try it once when I happened to be in Lafayette and they had a ton of these Corner Stores. Got a couple OVs and then got a fraud alert
Should have told them I was leaving civilization for the Laffy.
