Changing your permanent address to your 2nd home

I have been toying with the notion that I could recoupe my state income tax if I changed my permanent address from my LA home to the family condo in FL. Is this even in the realm of possibilities? I work outside of the country so “home” is irrelevant.

It’s common enough to have a residence of convenience if you work outside the country. You’ll lose your LA homestead exemption on property taxes, though.

If you worked in LA you pay LA state income tax regardless of where you live.

"Worked in Louisiana – but not a Louisiana Resident
You are a nonresident of Louisiana if you did not live in Louisiana at any time during 2017 – if you did not have a legal home address there. However, you must file a Louisiana income tax return if you earned any wages or income from any Louisiana source(s) and you filed a 2017 federal tax return. Use Form IT-540B."

Some states go to lengths to ensue you maintain significant physical presence at the address before granting designated main residence there though. South Carolina is that way.
