At what point does a side-hustle/hobby require an occupational license?

What are the criteria that mandate an occupational license when a side-hustle/idea becomes a significant income generator?? Are home-based businesses exempt? Asking for a friend...

Whenever the government finds out you're generating revenue, they want their tax money

You can just treat it like a Sole Proprietorship and pay taxes that way. Not Your Dad's CPA is a great resource for this kind of thing.

If your business requires a license it requires a license, there's rarely an income requirement. If you are a general contractor and that requires a license it doesn't matter if you do one job for $5000/year or millions.
I'm not really sure where you are coming from and I'm assuming you don't want to give a lot of details, but it rarely matters how much revenue you are doing.
You can likely contact whomever manages your licenses and get the information to "get into the business".

Home based businesses are not exempt from occ liicenses. In my parish, the base fee is $50/year, and it increases according to business volume.
Also know that home based businesses usually require a separate permit if you live in property that’s zoned residential. If you are filing business income taxes or advertising your business, go ahead and get your home based business properly permitted and licensed. You don’t want a nosy or disaffected neighbor complaining to code enforcement that you’re doing whatever without a proper permit.
