My parents are early-to-mid 50's and are in desperate need of someone to guide them a bit in some investing. They've saved their whole lives, have some (well, let's be honest . . .crappy) rental property, and don't owe money on anything. But, I feel like they aren't preparing themselves well for retirement. They don't have a big nest egg to draw from. My mother should have teacher's retirement, but who knows what that will look like in another 10-15 years. . . .

Anyway, I'm just looking for some recommendations for someone they can sit down with and talk over what their plan of action should be over the next 10-15 years to maximize their financial potential over that period. I know it's really too late to do a whole lot, but anything is better than nothing! Anyone have someone they recommend in/around Lafayette?

Outside of specific recommendations, what should they look for in selecting someone to help them with this type of planning? Certain qualifications? Certain certifications?

Thanks in advance, guys.

Your parents are probably better prepared for retirement than 90% of people in their 50s! It is likely they are comfortable in their present situation because they understand it and have experienced no down side from what they are doing, my parents were the same way. They don't have a liquid nest egg, but if the rental property provides a sufficient income stream they may not need one. It is always good to make improvements, but be wary of someone pushing investments your parents don't understand.
