Any one who works for an HR dept.
Okay long story short. I started as a welding instructor a few months back. The semster will be over in 2.5 weeks. I have been told by both the Asst. Dean and head of HR exact words are they want me to countinue teaching that they will get me a contract somtimes this week. Well i have yet to see a contract and i am starting to think that im getting the run around.( possibly dont want me leaving prior to the end of the semester ending, with no replacment) So my question is that would the head of HR tell me "yes you have the job we want you, we just the head dean to sign off on your contract first". I have worked shutdowns for 12 years so im use to the mind set that if someone promises you a job you dont BELIEVE them untill you are on that job. From what i am told by the Asst. Dean in a seanse they "praise" me for the work that i do. So just trying to get my finances straight an in line just in case. But this is the first time me working in this sort of environment so hopefully someone has some experience in this

If they said some time this week then give them until Friday.

What other options do you have if they don’t keep you around after the summer starts?

So you believe they have no intention of hiring you but are stringing you along until the end of the semester?

I usually go with the truth. I'd tell them that you need to ensure you are gainfully employed by X date or you will be forced to consider other options. Tell them that you've enjoyed your time there and want to continue, but it would be irresponsible for you to put your family in that situation because you've got bills to pay. Of course, you have to be willing to act if they tell you that they can't meet your deadline. If you're not willing to get back on your tools, then maybe you don't want to be so bold if you think it might jeopardize your situation.

Do you work for a state community college?

If so, those wheels turn really slow. They are likely just as frustrated as you are.

And you’d prefer teaching to that?

I've never worked at one, but I know several that have taught at them (in LA) and I know the CFO of one.

Seems like it's always last minute, gotta see how many kids project to sign up, what their budget is going to be like, etc.

Being that this is the end of your first semester, I think you could easily pull off going and talking to your dept chair / dean and just asking them when you can expect an update... that you are new to this and just want to make sure you haven't missed anything.
