I’m just a diehard fan. I know the basics but I’m mostly clueless when it comes to the detailed nuances of game plans and schemes, etc.

Is it even possible to change and implement a new defensive scheme in 2 weeks? Or is Pelini just clueless. Is the problem in his game plan or is it the execution?

Simplify things, remove things like certain combo coverages and blitzes yes. Change assignments based off personnel yes. Install a completely different defense.. HELL NO.

What kills me is they can’t even seem to grasp the simple concept of “follow #00 wherever he goes”. I just want to see us accomplish getting a man on a man. No switching, no handoffs, just take a guy with 1/2 deep safeties.

This has to be the move going forward. It could lead to still giving up yards and drives but it will probably eliminate the big plays which I think is the defense’s biggest problem. Simplify it and let your athletes be athletes.

Now how to stop from getting gashed in the run is a different story but fixing one problem at a time is probably the best solution in the short term.

its to hard to just follow some one when there are rub routes, you can get ut leveraged by formation,or flooded in a zone concept.so a combination of man and maybe some quaters coverage would probaly be best.

post is so full of ignorance.

follow wherever he goes = let me lob it over this defender's head

no switching = pick play easy throws

It may not be rocket science, but modern offenses aren't that easy to scheme against, especially dealing with a bunch of teenagers of avg or less intelligence and no off-season to prepare.

well said. football is reaching a crux again like it has many times in the past where something is legal now (rub routes) that will probably be a penalty at some point in the future (like pick routes) but until it's made a penalty it creates an unfair advantage for the offense.
think of things like crack-back blocks, head hunting, etc ... rub routes will be redefined before long.

I would teach a cover 3 quick the way we have blown coverages and bad tackling. Also would like to see some mlb blitzes

You can continue to teach the schemes you are trying to run but as far as learning a new defense no....but maybe it wouldn't hurt to start over

The need isn't necessarily switching to a totally new defense. The players are confused in the defense we have installed right now.

They did that against state.
We also blitzed linebackers to "dial up pressure" and their receivers ran slants to those holes the entire second half.
It was maddening.

the problem is who is to blame for the coverage busts? most fans believe it's Bo and he is a bad coach and must not be doing a good job of teaching the coverages and schemes...I tend to think that when a cb points to the safety after a guy streaks down the field wide open that it's a players issue since no defensive scheme has ever called to allow a receiver to be unaccounted for

just being straight up, i remember when Orgeron said Pelini could run a 3/4 defense... Pelini should run a 3/4 defense...
