When LSU won the championship in '58, they punted on 3rd down sometimes.

They won some big games 7-0.

I think its better than getting your QB killed.

He would line up to punt, confuse evryone and then fake the punt.

Not quite, but the level could be puffed up some.

I remember the old quick kick play in high school back in the late 60's. Have never seen a "drop kick" in a live game and have not seen a "quick kick" (punt on 3rd down) since the 70's.

That old pic that I saw on the RANT today of Mike the Tiger and "The BEAR" brought back memories of a game in Tiger Stadium where Bear Bryant had 3rd and very long because of penalties and his QB/punter caught LSU off guard and punted. It rolled about 20 or 30 more yards after an average punt that netted about 65 yards. I think this is a lost art and most coaches are scared to use it because "nobody else" does it. You think Miles has this play with JJ or JL at QB to punt on third and 30? Stranger things have happened.

Literally one of the stupidest things people can do. You can catch the defense just as off guard if you do it on 4th down.

Thats why most teams run a draw in that instance. Teams are forced to respect the pass (if you can actually throw the ball) and you will usually get 5-10 yards.

Last time I saw a QB punt was Colt McCoy's last year at UT. On some 4th down situations they would line up in shotgun then after judging the defensive line up, he would drop back and punt.

That may still happen time to time these days, but I doubt you will ever see it on 3rd down again. If it's 3rd and forever, most teams just run the ball to give themselves some room and then punt like they normally would.

I've forgotten the exact circumstances, but I'm pretty sure Elway did it once w/Denver. IIRC, the ball took a great bounce, and he wound up getting about 70 yards out of it.

Dude, he couldn't even kick hard enough to get a felony and that guy's head was on the ground. I doubt he could do better with something in the air.

Not just "sometimes" - quite often. If it was 3rd and 10 or more inside their own territory, the Tigers would more often than not, punt.

Billy Cannon's famous 89 yard punt return in 59 was on a 3rd down punt by Ole Miss.

Spurrier did it when he was still coaching the Gators. They were playing Arkansas. QB got sacked, holding penalty, and i think a false start. Ended up being 3rd and damn near 30 deep in gator territory. He was really pissed off at his offense. Pulled them off the field and punted. It was actually pretty damn funny.
