re: Why scheduling tough OOC games is such a no win proposition

LSU looked great and crushed a top five opponent in its opener. Set aside whether or not you think they deserve to move up to number one, or you prefer to stalk number one for the year and play the underdog card, or you recognize as we all do that if the Tigers win out they will be where they want to be.
Think about watching the game Saturday night...
...How did it feel watching the Tigers dismantle #3 Oregon?
For me, I was HIGHLY entertained.

If LSU schedules a top five opponent in an opening match-up (the likes of which hasn't happened in over a decade) and then dominates that opponent, how can they not move above other teams that beat awful teams (for the record this is a hypothetical question, I get why they won't move up)? This is part of what is broken about college football.
No, what's broken is so many people too busy thinking about the END of the season right after the FIRST game of the season. You're like a teenager having sex, you think it's all about the end - it's not. Some of us like to enjoy the ride - each game as it happens.
Therefore, having as many top-ranked OOC foes as possible is preferable to having to watch a bunch of scrubs week in and week out.

So if there is no upside to a big victory over Oregon in terms of ranking, why do we put so much at risk for so little?
For the entertainment value of actually watching the games instead of worrying about the end of the season.
I've been waiting since last January for the season to start, and now you want to jump ahead to January 2012...? Give it some time.

Forget the polls. Games like this are great for college football and fun for the fans.
Bowl atmosphere, big stage, meeting a new fan base, and you get to see your team play another big name that you would typically only play in a bowl game.
Every BCS team should have to play a comparable OOC opponent.

This year's schedule is a perfect example of why scheduling the right OOC games is a great thing.
- We play a great team first week, so we're operating at high efficiency right out of the gate.
- We get NWS (basically a high school team) or second week to finetune our passing game and basically have a rest week before the short week vs. Moo State.
Correct....
May I add one more thing?
We also get two extra days of rest than WVU due to the MSU Thursday Game. I think WVU will get hit very hard by the buzz-saw.

I completely agree with this post. I wish LSU would schedule big games like this often. I would just like the reward to be commiserate with such great effort. We don't need to jump ahead, I would just like to see LSU get the credit I think they deserve for a tough schedule.
ETA: I also agree with BordyLSU's post

The problem is that as of today, we don't know if it was a tough schedule. Oregon may end up having a bad year. Tulsa and Kent St. may turn out to be very strong teams.
There isn't enough to go on yet. IMO voters know this and do adjust accordingly as the year progresses. I'm sure that many voters would agree that early polls are useless. But they sell magazines and news papers because people like us put stock in them for some reason.

IMHO, it's a gamble to schedule tough OOC games - especially early; in the unlikely event that Oregon goes on to have a poor season, than it sort of cheapens the win. But it's a gamble worth taking...
Saturday night was a great time to be an LSU fan!!
Edit: Just saw the 2 prior posts - I agree!!

but if you don't schedule them early when are you going to fit them in? Certainly not in the middle of conference play. We need our Western Kentucky's and ULM's(unless you're Saban) if we want to survive conference play.

This is correct, remember it is the body of work throughout the long season that will determine where we will be. I like the fact that BOTH teams had the balls to schedule this game, there is so much on the line. It will be difficult if not impossible for Oregon to make it the NC game. Had we lost, our SOS would have given us and opportunity to get to the game. In the end, I like having the tougher games, "to be the best, you have to beat the best"!!

You act as we never start off the season with a cupcake. We will get rewarded, no worries.
