Why extend and overpay a coach no one else would ever want?

O is like the cat that ate the canary. He jacked the state of La. and Woodward was complicit.

Guy won a NC, and Woodward didn't have much of a choice. They dollar amount certainly could have been less. That's about to resolve itself.

What contract terms would you have offered him? If he unilaterally refused your new terms, what would your response have been? Would you have just let him coach out his contract as it was with 2 years left?

Keep in mind, you just started a couple months ago, not everyone believes in you, and therefore your own job security and reputation, along with that of the entire department, university, and state you represent hang in the balance.

Also, this is the greatest thing that has happened to the morale of the university in several years, and it was thrust upon you without any effort on your own. It just happened to happen the first couple months on your watch. Then, immediately after that, the entire world economy is shut down and your erstwhile guaranteed revenue disappears.

What--exactly, in detail--would you have done?

It's really fun to play the Game of LSU AD LIFE, when the consequences aren't yours to bear.

They were stuck. Once Burrow, Aranda and Brady won us the national championship, he had all of the leverage, and I'm sure he had a ton of support from boosters.

Our specialty is extending coaches no one wants.

Baloney. A new contract? Sure. But 6 years and $7 million per year? Guaranteed? Hell no! And I said so, on this forum, at the time.

Should have given him $4.5 million for 5 years with 3 years guaranteed and two years “partially” guaranteed. That way you could say it was 5 years guaranteed.

You would not need to justify the low salary, because Orgeron justified it in the binder when he said that he would be paid less and his coordinators more.

That’s what went wrond with this experiment. We did not have enough money left, after paying through the nose for Orgeron, to go out and buy the best coordinators.

It's not guaranteed. LSU can buy him out. It's sadly not surprising how wrong most people are at understanding basic contract terms.

We were willing to pay top dollar for the very best coaches. They did not want to come here because of Orgeron. Because they knew this was likely to happen.

We did it for years with Les. Why is it a surprise?
