Titles really don't start to count until the abolishment of segregation on the field. I mean was that really the best team without every player available? No it was not, not even close.

Lsu claiming a championship in 1908 would be like Boise State claiming 2009. Sure, they had a good season, but they played weak competition and would have been crushed by Alabama or Texas. Likewise, Lsu would have crushed by Penn or Harvard in 1908.

Tell me about those Texas, Alabama, Penn, and Harvard rosters from that season and why you're so confident in this.

Ole Miss went 10-0 and we went 9-1-1 and they beat us 15-7 in Tiger Stadium and even they didn't win the national title, finishing 3rd in the final AP poll behind USC and Wisconsin.
Back in those days, the polls and rankings were pretty much weighted against most Southern schools. The smug sports chattering classes all believed the Eastern and Big Ten and Pac-8 teams were the powers in football, and there were rarely many interconference games between those and SEC or other Southern schools, except maybe bowl match-ups, of which the South won its share and more. But don't mess with the narrative...

And yet Michigan never beat an East Coast powerhouse in that era. The point-a-minute thing is catchy, but they played weak competition in the Western conference (forerunner to the Big 10).

They sure as hell made Stanford quit. West coast was soft, even then.

Because we're not Bama or Ole Miss.

Lots of Alabama envy and angst in this line. Yet before wire service polling, all those Alabama Rose Bowl victories, and newspaper articles declaring them national champs, ticker tape parades, actually happened. You know...real, not fake? They were not invented.

Alabama had quite a few other seasons that could be legitimately considered worthy of NC...1945, 1949, 1966, 1978 for example but doesn't claim. You people have seemingly convinced each other Alabama's NCs are bogus. Well, that's not the only thing you all have convinced each other of nor is it the only fantasy that is widely believed by bitter envious people.

You forgot to mention the final Ladies Home Journal poll from 1942.

Think you meant 1977 instead of 1978.

Alabama could make a claim for 1945- undefeated Rose Bowl winner- but never has. 1966 is a little dicier as Alabama never made a big deal about being ranked 3rd behind ND & MSU at the time.

I think Bama's best case would be 1977 as Bama beat OSU but was leapfrogged by ND who went from 5th to 1st. ND had lost to a Mississippi team Bama had demolished.
