Why do people care so much about total yards gained and allowed?

IMO, total yards gained or allowed is no where near the most important stat that people should be talking about. Total points allowed and scored is the bottom line, most important stat of any football game. LSU is averaging 38-12, give or take a few. I'm not sure what Bama is averaging, but I'm guessing it's somewhere near 40-7. Can someone research and post what the average points scored by both LSU's and Bama's opponents this year?

The last 7 years who ever had the most rushing yards has one the ball game. I'd say that's a good reason why people want stats.

But, this could be because the winner is running to keep the clock moving and to avoid turnovers. The losing team had to abandon the run to stop the clock and to take the high risk high reward attempt.
So, sometimes it is not the "rushing" itself that tells the tale.

Your right beaux and I thought about this.....this is what I came up with, when have you ever seen miles or Saban abandon the run. I haven't. It's not like huge blowout wins you know.

Could it be that the only reason you are noting this is because it's one stat LSU doesn't have the edge in?

people don't comprehend the difference between correlation and causation...that's why they love the rushing stats...and cause they're dumb

I see your point. But I really don't understand why people keep saying that LSU's Offense is so bad because they are 78th in the country in total yardage. Those same people don't take into consideration that LSU usually wins the field position battle for starting LOS each game. Of course you're not going to have as many yards when you start your possessions around the 30-35 each time.

I don't see where y'all are getting that I'm saying they have an edge rushing. Yeah they have a supreme back, but we have 5 young talented backs who will prolly all see ample playing time and they could start for any program in the country. We also have a rushing QB that will get snaps. I brought that up because I think we rush double the amount as Bama. I say we rush for 180 to bamas 90. Any takers??!!

turnovers can skew the stats, as well as special teams. but defenses who make turnovers, or offenses who give away the ball, will have those stats noted. special teams are somewhat irrelevant when discussing the efficiency of an offense or defnese
yards per play is often better than total yards, anyway (esp now with the no huddle offenses that will put up yards)

Because those stats tend to measure a team's ability to advance the ball when they have it, and stop the other team from advancing the ball when they have it. That is the basic thing teams are trying to do, and they're awarded points when they do it well enough. Yes, sometimes, a team is good at advancing the ball in general, but bad at closing the deal to earn points, and sometimes a team is good at closing the deal but not that great at advancing the ball in general, so the stats are not perfect indicators of the quality of a team. They are, however, usually pretty significant. Very few teams average 500 yards of offense a game and don't score much, and very few average 200 yards a game and score a lot.
