Saban recruited Mauck while he was at Michigan State. Mauck played baseball, didn't make it. Then he called Saban and asked if he could play for him at LSU.
Doesn't matter how he got there, he was there because of Saban and Saban trusted him to be the quarterback which worked out. When Mauck left a year early for the NFL Jamarcus and Matt Flynn were redshirt freshman.

"I'd be more pleased, but I'd still consider both seasons to have been wasted in terms of developing the future."
We will just have to agree to disagree. It is a matter of degree, but the degree was significant. Going into 2005, JR was still developing but he was much further along than Harris in terms of PT.
"Think back after the Oregon St game and how obvious it was JR was the guy and how frustrated fans were every time Marcus came onto the field."
I don't remember this precisely the same way. Yes, JR was the toast of the town after the OSU comeback, but I also remember that he was extremely raw and completed a very low percentage. At times, people were frustrated to see MR but at other times, who could argue with it? In general, you saw each QB come in when the other failed to perform and we got some wins that way. JR (OSU) and MR (Florida) and we almost got another in the bowl game.
"The biggest difference was the moral authority Saban possesed that Miles has never had to tel fans to go get bent and allow him to coach the team."
Meh, this may be some folks' crusade but it's not mine. The big difference to me is that 2004 was handled in a way that allowed for the more talented QB to develop while that has not been the case this season.

I think the comparison to 2004 is fair and instructive. I think the fans thought Russell should have played more in 2004. Here, we have a similar situation except the incumbent is worse and the young phenom is getting less experience. Moreover, at least Randall was an upperclassman who had significantly more experience. Here, the experience gap between the two QBs was not as great.
Indeed, the fear I have is that the rationale for Jennings (his experience; Harris' lack thereof) will be even more valid in 2015 than it was this year. Can you imagine absolutely wasting the 2015 defense we will have with the putrid, one-dimensional offense we may have again in 2015 with AJ at the helm.
It really will be 2011 all over again except the defense won't be THAT good and the offense will be significantly worse. 9-3/8-4 with losses to Bama, Ole Miss and one or two of A&M, MSU or Arkansas.
