"I think that's the policy. If you beat #1, you're #1 until someone beats you. Then they're #1. Even if you haven't won a game all season. That's an NCAA rule. Don't trust me, look it up."
That's what Notre Dame tried to argue in 1971.
Notre Dame was a 1-loss team and they beat undefeated and #1 Texas in the Cotton Bowl. However #3 Nebraska was undefeated with one tie, and they moved up to #1 in the final poll when they beat LSU in a close game at the Orange Bowl.
