I
quote:

Bat speed is what creates energy. The mass is fixed at ~30 ounces. Big muscles arent required to generate bat speed.

I’m no physicist, but I think this is wrong. The mass is not fixed at 30 ounces, because it’s connected to the guy swinging it. The transfer of energy is from his entire body at the point of contact—or at least his trunk to his arms—which increases momentum (mass x velocity).

Now, like your point about pitchers not being jacked(although quite a few have big, muscular legs), there is a point of diminishing returns. If you are too big and lose flexibility, you will lose bat or arm speed. That’s one of the things that was so impressive about McGwire—dude kept that incredible bat speed despite being so ridiculously huge.

Here’s the thing I think most people overlook about the steroids. Everyone is quick to point to “steroids make you strong but don’t help you hit the ball”. I think this is false. You still have to recognize pitches, but the extra strength is going to give you time to see that pitch for just a little longer. McGwire said this himself. He and Bonds and a shite load of other guys didn’t need roids to hit the ball out of the ballpark. Everyone in the bigs has enough power if they know what pitch is coming. I don’t know if it significantly increases bat speed, but it has to help you get the momentum started faster. In turn you can look at a pitch longer before deciding to swing.
