it seems to me that many, if not most people salivate over the offenses that produce the most yards and that everything else is secondary.

is this a by product of the video football games?

I know fast paced yard gobbling teams are fun to watch but winning the games seems more important. and teams that control the clock win more championships.

I think it depends on how good a team's defense is. If a team has a shitty defense, ie A&M and Oregon for example, then the focus becomes to simply outscore the opponent, and running as many offensive plays as possible obviously facilitates that line of thinking.

However, I think the balance of power in college football remains with the power teams, those with the ability to run the ball and control the clock while allowing their defense to support that.

The hurry-up offense has its advantages, and you see old-school programs like LSU and Alabama using it some, but they'll never join those teams who seem to be looking at quantity of plays over quality of plays.

and they'd have a good point if the winner was decided by the most yards.

west virginia had almost a thousand yards combined against us and bama yet lost both games. thats not coincidence. it will be the same with texas am. an offense like that will look incredible against every average defense and then sputter and die as soon as it faces a good one.

of the 16 BCS champs, only Florida and Auburn ran a spread, and it was a run-first spread with Tebow and Newton at QB. Texas ran a ton too, about 2 to 1, but not from a spread (I dont think) and, again, it was with another all-time great college QB.

an offense that throws the ball all over the place will always be the headline of week one, because its very easy to learn and execute and will put up big numbers right out of the gate, but barring sheer random luck, it wont beat a good defense. "sheer random luck" is not a plan for winning a title.

One that that has players to execute the run or pass while having O-coordinator with knowledge to call plays that will exploit defenses the most.

Balanced, effective, consistent, and explosive when needed.

There isn't one offense that is better than the other.

It matters which style fits the personnel best.

You'll see this saturday when MSU plays Oregon.

One of them will win, but the losing offense won't have an epiphany and change their offense.....it's about improving execution so you can control the game the way you want to.

This might seem like an oversimplification, and to some degree it is, but it is also correct.

The other side of it is, who is your offense, and who are they playing. Good offense in the SEC in 2011, was a whole world different than good offense in the Big 12 in 2011. Texas A&M fit the criteria of a good offense in 2013 and 2012, except when they played LSU. Texas A&M has the mentality, similar to Oregon, if they find a weakness they'll exploit ad nauseam and reap as many points as possible.

One that scores on the most possible possessions while taking the most time off of the clock. Its always been that way. There is no new criterion, just fans that dont understand the game they love. Same shite as always

Just me, but I like an offense that controls possession/clock, wears down opp D and scores TDs, while your D rests.
I especially think it's important for limiting a young D to a lot of plays in which mistakes can be exposed.
The whoever-has-the-ball-last-wins type game is a low percentage attack, and only slightly entertaining when watching 2 teams I care nothing about.

Like when they faced bama... Only 1 team shut them down. Their defense was their downfall

Well you tend to generate a lot of yards when you're playing from behind.

If you have a great offense and good defense, score fast and score often. It puts pressure on the opposing defenses and allows your defense to generate turnovers.

The Eagles, Saints, Patriots, Broncos, Green Bay, etc. Have shown that it's a successful formula.

Points per drive is the best criterion IMO

1. A 3000+ yard passer
2. 2 1000+ yard receivers
3. A 1400+ rusher

This would satisfy me
