What is the point of ranking the teams throughout the year?

If all they do is decide at the end who they think the 4 best teams are?
Do they look at injury reports throughout the year and change rankings or is that only at the end?

Whats the point of actually playing ganes?
If a team in a Power 3 conference goes undefeated and wins their conference championship, yet gets left out because 2 1-loss teams are ‘better’, why even play games?
