I don't say this with condescension towards the OP, but the coaches hold ALL of the negotiating leverage because the fans/donors demand excellence. If you are BK in 2021, a successful HC at a power program, you don't NEED to leave. So in order to do so, the other school has to make a big offer. LSU fans demanded excellence. So BK got to name his terms.
The question for the fans/donors is are you willing to accept a less "in demand" hire in exchange for lesser contract terms? Fewer years. Less money. Low buyout, etc. Otherwise, the in demand coach can name his price

It is a general perception that a top tier HC needs a 5 yr contract for recruiting purposes. Anything less tells recruits that the coach does not have a vote of confidence from Admin and coach may not be around when an incoming recruit is in their jr/sr yrs.
