We thought Dale couldn't coach

The knock on Dale Brown was he can recruit but not coach. Since his retirement LSU basketball has disappointed beyond what we could imagine. JJ is lousy at game management. Dale could adjust/motivate during games which helped us win. We need to hire a motivator/recruiter who can coach during the game. That's what we're missing now.

He couldn't coach. He had the ability to recruit, as well as people on his staff that could recruit. Now was he a terrible coach, no. Was he good enough, yes. He was pretty successful at LSU. Was a great mentor, and role model. An absolute beast ambassador for Louisiana and LSU. But, he underachieved with some of the most talented teams in the country.

agreed. dale brown is the only coach in my lifetime that brought true excitement to LSU basketball for any length of time. it takes a special person to be able to do that. basketball recruiting has always been tough for football schools but the way the rules work today (one and done) and the way the AAU works, i'm not even sure a young dale brown could recruit that well.

And at other times, overachieved with teams that had middling talent.

I would take a young Dale Brown over what we've had recently in a heartbeat. He wasn't perfect but he consistently won.

That's because he couldn't. Chris Jackson, Shaq, and Stanley Roberts agree.

unfortunatiy different is not necessarily better ,something that the dale brown fiesco should have taught people , the fan base is the worlds worst way of making coaching decisions !

What years did he underachieve with one of the most talented teams in the country? 1989-1990, sure. But that's it. And he had that team for 1 year in an era where being young really was an issue. In the NCAA tournament LSU lost to a team with 3 future NBA starters. While I agree that the 90 team underachieved, what other teams in the Dale Brown era underachieved?

Dale was only as good as his best assistant, and most of the time he had some pretty good ones who knew how to coach (Art Tolis, Rick Huckaby, Tex Winter). Also, unlike Les Miles, he usually had the good sense to stay out of the way of the person with the real basketball knowledge. Unfortunately, I think he overestimated the coaching ability of Craig Carse, which somewhat started the downhill slide, and which eventually accelerated due to the Lester Earl incident.

I said it all last year, Johnny Jones is a Dale Brown that cannot motivate (and that was all Dale had as a coach).

This is stupid. You don't go to 2 final fours, 2 elite eights, and 2 sweet sixteens and not be able to coach basketball
