FWIW, I bet they take this call and review it at the end of year and use it as a teaching tool.

I think screen shots aren't an accurate indicator, if you rewind it 2 or 3 frames back initial contact is still being made but the ball is under his feet.
Absolutely, you can watch in highspeed like a lightbulb being dropped frame by frame and see it bounce in the 2 frames after impact but in real time it shatters on impact, after the shockwave rips through it. Same principle, the game is not viewed frame by frame, the bulb shatters as it hits the floor and the runner hits Jones as he's fielding the ball

Absolutely, that exact play can be taught at clinics across the nation.... I'd like to get an explanation on it from the guy that made the call and maybe one of his supervisors.....
Posted on 3/12/11 at 12:08 am to LeagueCityTiger
it's the base runners obligation to get out of the way.

His supervisor is the worst ump in the state

True but the argument that comes into play is that once the ball is misplayed, it's no longer the runners responsibility to get out of the way.... That is the ultimate question my friend....

Did anyone notice the long pregame conference between the umps and the two head coaches... they talked about the ground rules of Alex Box for a very long time.....

quote:no it isn't it's up to him to get out the way plain and simple. say it's a bunt and Jones is charging for it, the ball hasn't gotten to him yet but he still collides with the runner. is that not the runners fault for not getting out of the way?

That's what I think, and think the main basis for the judgement call was.
However, the base-running rules for NCAA baseball aren't as clear cut (or rather non-existant) as they are in other leagues.
Many other league rules state that the base runner has no right away to the base and must make attempts to move out of the way of fielding of the ball.

quote:jj#2 was not chasing the ball so AR 4 should not apply.the runner interfered with the fielder while he was making a play on the ball.
Either way, he misplayed it and therefore AR 4 comes into play. Obstruction and runner gets the base.

Your right but in that particular play jones had already somewhat misplayed the ball... i agree that the ump made the right call in that instance but I can see where Fullerton had a legit gripe...

But in that case the fielder never had a chance acneboy
In this case he might of had that chance

That is the subjective part in this particular play...

ola tagged the runner on the ground so you'd still be looking at 1st & 3rd 2 outs
They sent the guy back to 2nd. It was first and second. Two out

the runner went out of the base path so he's out automatically.
