You guys don't get it...It's not about if the ball is reach or not...it's about can the kid MAKE A PLAY and does the RUNNER INTERFERE with the ability to MAKE SAID PLAY. He was running full speed and overran the ball....HE COULD NOT MAKE A PLAY ON THE BALL PERIOD. Please tell me if the collision DID NOT occur where he could make a play?? Please tell me. You can't because no play was to be made at that point. IF Jacoby fields the ball cleanly or if the collisions occurs BEFORE Jacoby had the right to field the ball then YES it is interference. Neither of those occured. I really do not see what is so hard about this.
I'm thinking the same about you. Jacoby was bracing for impact so he leaned forward. It's the runner's responsibility to try and get out of the way, which he didn't. The play was in front of the base runner while Jones was focused on the ball. At impact the ball was right under JJ. If he's not leaning forward he MAY have been able to recover but we'll never know. We'll just have to agree to disagree and understand things like this is what makes the sport so great.

I think once Jacoby knew there was going to be impact, he looked away from the ball and that's why it wasn't caught. I think I'd be more concerned about getting clocked at that point, even if the guy was only 5 feet tall.

The spirit of the rule is to protect the fielder. This as are many plays during the fame is a judgement call. Being so bang bang this is the only call an ump can make. in theory you are correct the fielder had an unimpeded play on the ball before contact but it was too close to rule that way.

I have in the past seen third basemen run into base runners intentionally to get the runner called out for interference. I am just glad both guys are okay
