Maybe a new twist developing in the new NIL era. Teams are going to take players through the portal and end up with several more players than spots for the team limit in the spring. Then basically, the players are going to have to try out for the team again each spring and the ones that don’t make it will get processed. It’ll never be called tryouts, but might end up that way. Not bad for the top players, but not good for ones on the cusp. I don’t know.

If you put your hopes on players than you better have alternatives
They can leave whenever they want now

Aren’t scholarships essentially tryouts yearly anyway?

The term you're referring to is "preferred walkons"? No roster spot guaranteed whatsoever

No, I think they squeeze players that have scholarships, but they no longer want and they need to make room on the roster. They probably tell them something like, your a nice kid and we like you, but you’re not gonna play a single down for the rest of college this school and zero in NIL. they get to practice hard and wake up early for workouts and everything with zero chance of playing or they can go to another school and play.
