When Saban took over LSU it was a garbage dump

Horse shite! Lets not act like Dinardo wasn't recruiting! Saban's first year, 2000 was full of good players.

Josh Reed, Domanick Davis, Rohan Davey, Tommy Banks, LaBrandon Toefield, Devery Henderson, Jack Hunt, Stephen Peterman,Joe Domingeaux, Damen James,Donnie Jones,John Corbello, Robert Davis etc.

The cupboard was far from bare!!

At the time of hire I think yes, if this is what OP intended to ask.
Probably as nationally renowned LSU football coach hire as any.

Great point. And , of course Saban did a great job. But the Nick and Terry Saban narrative that "we had to build LSU from scratch" is just stupid.

I'm not sure why this question is asked

No "gotcha" here, honestly. Have just been thinking about LSU's coaching line and how many of those guys the Rant considered to be elite.

[quote]Geauxbrown, you left off the winningest coach in LSU history that also won a NC and went to another. Typical Miles hater[/quote

I'm not a Miles "hater". Did he frustrate me? Absolutely but I can remember being so mad at Saban I would have throat punched him if the opportunity presented itself.

I have a tremendous amount of respect for Coach Miles, however I do admit that I doubt he would have been able to accomplish what he did had Saban not been here prior to his arrival.

Saban was a nobody when LSU hire him. I even remember the collective "Who is Nick Saban, and didnt LSU just throttle his Michigan State team"

He was only a nobody to people that know nothing about football or don't follow it much outside of the LSU bubble. I was a student when Saban was hired and I was pumped. If you paid attention then, you knew how highly regarded he was a defensive coach. There is a reason that Mark Emmert directed Joe Dean to pay him the money. He wasn't a nobody. He was considered an elite defensive coach.

This is the dumbest argument on tRant. Name all the age 64 head coaches that have been hired for P5 programs this century. I'll hang up and patiently wait your response.

Tough one? Out of pity, just FBS coaches hired at age 64+ this century.
That's a shite ton of turnover and surely you can find just one.

Just one precedent, c'mon.

No I got plenty of 64+ year old coaches who still have jobs because they didn’t get fired for sucking and if they decided to leave their jobs would he at the top of anybody’s coaching search. Miles is the only coach on earth with a resume like his who can’t get a job regardless of age. Using age as an excuse is just pathetic and false. You think Saban who’s older wouldn’t have his choice of jobs if he left Bama?

False

Arnsparger and Paul were not elite

Saban was just super good luck spotting a diamond in the grass.

Les was a great hire.

Bo is the one that could have been elite, at best a very good hire.

The rest are below those.

I didn't make an excuse, only asked for a precedent that you evidently can't supply.

Lol wow, so making up a reason for a situation you disagree with using completely speculative reasons and not a shred of proof to support it isn’t an excuse? Rantards gonna ranter

Nothing speculative about what I asked for.
You're failing unless you can bring one lousy hire. That is all.
