I think this was similar. They told Kelly they'd spend whatever they had to but he better grab some players that he thinks can get the job done, because they don't want to hear about talent deficiency from him anymore.

In truth Kelly was given a 100 mill contract so he didn't have to do shite if he didn't want to. This is literally only year four and he has 3 years with 10, 10, and 9 wins. He wasn't sweating a damn thing.

In truth Kelly realized the problems year after year and tackled them. First year the defense was decent and the portal worked, so he did it again. He slso realized JD needed some help, so they came up with a plan. Problem is the defense was horrendously bad (especially the secondary) and the offense was elite. So the next year he did a search and got suggestions and figured the best course of action was to get back Raymond and Baker. The mistake this year was thinking that he could offer guys chump change to come here in the portal when they had way better offers. After an improvement in defense and decrease in offense, he realized he was getting close. So now he goes all in for the top portal class. Spending somewhere between 18-20 mill for this roster. They fill every need with high quality players. We got guys who could have been drafted this past year, to come to LSU. We got several high potential younger guys who already proved themselves elsewhere. Even the money for high school recruits was well spent. Retention was good too.

Kelly realized that he could relinquish some of his power and deligate it to others. He has a GM now.

People act like Kelly doesn't have two former DCs who are now coaches of good SEC teams.
