Personally, I'm partial to the TE pass

I think it's great if you have good receiving TEs. Gordon was a great blocker and is an average at best receiver. Dickson is a decent receiver. None of them are good enough to warrant taking targets away from Beckham/Landry. We were just using our personnel the absolute best we could. I'd say things worked out OK.

Next year, as I've said, Smith will have a year under his belt and Washington is a receiving TE, so look for more TE involvment in the passing game.

I'm hoping they'll be more involved in the passing game next year.

I don't understand this sentiment that we NEED to throw to TEs. If we have good receiving TEs, sure let's throw to them to add a wrinkle to our offense. Great. This year, it just didn't make any sense other than maybe once a game.

fricking this. One of the best offenses we ever had and people complain about not utilizing the te's to make themselves sound football smart.

People love to repeat whatever the talking point of the week is on Sunday NFL Live and act like it makes them Bill Walsh.

I never said NEED.

I've already explained why I like the TE pass in general, and I seem to be higher on the ability of the current group than you do. Agree to disagree on that.

It's not that we aren't using TEs it's just Mett almost never looked that way. It was the same thing with Hill. It took him later in the year to finally look to the RB more. Some of that probably had to do with being under a system for two years that basically disregarded the TE position as nothing more than extra blockers. We should be throwing all over the field next year though.

with such inexperienced WR's. I sure hope Cam finds a way to get Smith & Washington involved. Hunt Palmer cracked a joke on twitter during the UA game. "Washington's one td catch in that game was more than all of the LSU TE's combined."....Thats pretty pathetic.

Absolutely. And I'm sure he will. UNLESS LES HANDCUFFS HIM RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE.

But if we have Fournette, Hill and our OL back, why even have a QB?

It's more interesting than it is pathetic IMO. We didn't really need them to be receiving threats. I find it amazing that our offense was THAT good without even using our TEs.

It would do so much for our offense if we had beast TE.

We don't really have dual threat te. Dickson and Gordon are glorified lineman. Desean and Jacory will change that

I say the TE's weren't where we wanted them as pass catchers. We really didnt attack the middle of the field much.

As to your other point; Mett has a hell of an arm, and seemed to be able to get it to his first or second option with very good consistency.

I think you will see things open up a good bit more. On Jennings drive vs Arkansas, he threw it to Gordon, Landry, Boone, and Dural, all in one drive. Mett probably targeted that many receivers for the entire game leading up to that.

To expound on this idea of not NEEDING to throw to the TEs, but why I think it's good strategy - I feel that it is just better to be more diverse as an offense, incorporating the physical presence of the TE. That physical presence can be a tone-setter, and help wear down a defense from a physical standpoint. The wearing down of a defense relative to how yards are gained shouldn't be undervalued.

To your point, I agree that an offensive game plan should reflect the personnel strengths of the team.

The 2013 offense was NFL-ish in the way that it featured its top perimeter playmakers, and with good reason. Landry and OBJ were highly developed and extremely reliable, so it made sense to lean on them. But typically, I favor more diversity at a more developmental level. It's good for morale and the energy of the team, and obviously gives the defense more to think about. But again, I don't want to nitpick the high production of the 2013 offense.

The weakness of the 2013 LSU football team was stopping the run.
