Les said the other night that the defensive breakdowns were not generally attributable to coaching because they are calling the same schemes used last year. This really bothered me. If we continue to use the same schemes, others will counter-scheme against them. But this was part of the marketing of the co-DC decision, that they would be continuing the same defensive schemes. The weaknesses exposed last year were not corrected this year. Maybe I am reading too much into this, but to continue the same defense, without innovation and positive changes, does not seem to me to be a good thing.

It may be that one or both of our co-DCs may have any number of good ideas that are not being implemented, but, considering the need for improvement all year long, I can't think of any reason to hold back. If they cannot improve the schemes, and improve on the coaching of the players, maybe change is a good thing.

Another thing that I recall from the start of the season was the implementation of some sort of practice routine where hard tackling was limited, to limit practice injuries. If I am recalling this correctly, this may explain some of the real weakness in tackling shown on the field. You play like you practice.

saban's teams never tackle during practice. they wrap up and let go. its called "thud". This is to prevent injuries.

They should know how to tackle. I'm old, never played college ball but still remember as a LB'er how I'd hit low, wrap up, drive legs.
